Zero trust in practice: sequencing identity, devices and data
Zero trust is a strategy, not a product. Our research note outlines a pragmatic sequence for large organizations.
By Security practice, Cybersecurity
Zero trust programmes fail when they are treated as a product purchase. They succeed when identity, device posture and data classification are sequenced deliberately and measured against real access decisions.
Start with identity
Strong authentication, lifecycle management and conditional access underpin every later control. Without them, network segmentation and data controls have nothing reliable to key on.
Then devices, then data
Device posture lets you make access decisions on context. Data classification lets you make them on sensitivity. Both are incremental programmes rather than projects.
- Measure progress by the share of access decisions that are risk-based.
- Retire implicit trust one network segment at a time.
- Pair every control with monitoring so drift is visible.
